Change in Privacy Settings Options Brings Criticism for Facebook

In a recent development in the privacy settings of Facebook, the social networking site asked its users to update their settings for privacy options on the site, which has resulted in making more information public on default.

This step taken by Facebook to ensure better management and publication of private details of users has been criticized by the users as well as critics, as it allegedly puts extra burden on the users to change their settings for making their personal details personal again.

The problem with such a step taken by Facebook is that if the users are not careful enough to change their privacy settings, their personal details including their gender and location will become available not only to other users of Facebook but to the world at large through search engines and syndication feeds.

The critics point out that the social networking site is trying to increase its traffic and to generate more revenues by putting confidential information of the users at stake. They also add that though changing the privacy settings is not a difficult task, it puts unnecessary burden on the users.

Barry Schnitt, a spokesperson for Facebook, pointed out that the only objective behind such a step is to monitor what information is being made publicly available. Schnitt added that any allegations that the site is trying to do something else is baseless.
