Free Gifts with Mobile Phones are Expensive!
Nothing in life is free, so, when you are promised a free PSP, i-pod or even a free laptop with your mobile phone you need to get suspicious and read the small print!
The fact is that whilst the gift may be “free” the mobile contract is not.
Often these free gifts are only given away on contracts with very expensive line rental. Also, the handsets given on these contracts are often older models the retailers are trying to clear.
What you need to consider is whether the retailer is really giving you good value for money. To figure this out, look at what you could get that handset or that tariff for elsewhere, and work out the cost difference between that deal and the one offering the free gift. If the difference is greater than the cost of the free gift, you are onto a bum deal!
However, some of these deals are in fact genuine. Consider someone who needs a lot of inclusive air time. The line rental on this kind of contract is going to be expensive, regardless of which handset you choose. Traditionally, retailers gave away the very best handsets with these contracts, but, what if you do not need or want an expensive handset?
Well, then you may wish to trade that handset in for a cheaper model and an additional gift.
The trick is to start with your own requirements in terms of airtime and work from there. Do not take on an expensive contract in order to get the free gift as it will work out very expensive for you, as, you will be spending money on airtime you will not use!
